Emma's Journal Part 4

Oct 6th Mon Sale of property still ____ing

Oct 7th Tue Sale closed – Saved? $7078.15 out of the wreck?. Frank’s fee not yet settled.

Oct 8th Wed Chas. + I went to N W Nat Bank + deposited ck. Divided is Chas __ __ ___

Oct 9th Thurs Sent ck $3000.00 went to Edw. L K+K ___. Went down town.

Oct 10th Fri Turned very cold last night. Chester + Leah came in past eve. + started a furnace fire. Went and did marketing at Brackets, then took Nic. Ave. car out to 48th St to Mrs. L. E. (F. E.?) Westlake to fair sewing meeting. Rode home with Mrs. Shenelon. Cold. Chester ___ out with Walter (Leah’s brother maybe?) to see him eat his dinner, as he has first flown in from Brainard after a disappointing trip.

Oct 11th Sat A little warmer today – Cloudy. Washed out some things + _____ – as Mary Hogan did not come as Mannie promised last night. The PM man came with the Dodge car, and Chester + me went for a ride. Chester drove so had a chance to try it. Called up Sue – Chester going to stay with Walter tonight + go hunting in the morning.

Oct 12 Sunday Still quite cool. Breakfast at 9:30 – Boys came in at 10 o’clock. No ducks. Soon went out to make a “flight” over Minnetonka Club grounds. Note to C. C. L. He, Lloyd and Walter came in for dinner at 6:30. Had a great day – C. went to Leah’s.

Oct 13th Monday Rained all day – warmer. After lunch I went to Sue’s at 306 Oak A___ St. at 3 PM she walked with me to woman’s club where I went to first lecture of Ann _______ - course of 10 lectures, by Univ. (Dr. Jenks?) put on by woman’s club + D.A.R. Back at 5PM Chester + I home all evening.

Oct 14th Tue Very cloudy. Mary came to reline my winter coat. Sent check for three months on Chester’s_____ (gout). Sewed all day. - - found, through Walter that Mr Knowles, the man whom Chester is buying a Dodge, was selling it to another man. So he called father at ----- and he said to go ahead with buying it.

Oct 15th Wed Gave Chester a check for 400 for first payment on Dodge. He has agreed o pay 50.00 per month until paid for. (950.00) which, with living, ----- will be quite binding for the family.
Mary came to sew and finish my winter outfit. (2.00 per day) Chester brought the car up after dinner, took Leah and myself out for a ride. I think th – will work out alright. – letter from Charles enclosing check for 100.00 toward car. Also enclosed letter from Frank abot sale of property, Which stated in P.S. that Mercy had her tonsils and adenoids taken out. Letter from D + B.

Emma's Journal Part 3


Cloquet Fire

Sept 26th Fri. Went back to Duluth arriving in time for dinner. Went to see May Dacey at St. Mary’s Hospital.

Sept 27th Sat. Beautiful morning. Left Stella’s house in Duluth at 9 0’clock. Frank rode downtown with us. Followed the black + white part way + blue + white through Barnum, Cloquet + Moose Lake with their all new houses built since the terrible fire of last fall. Sandstown Hinkley. Ate lunch south of Hinkley. Overtook the Crosbys here. I rode from here with the Crosbys with the understanding that we were to meet at White Bear, and I was to go with the Konantz and then to Minn. Saw them last at Rush Aly, were the Crosbys stopped about 8 minutes to see a relative. There we came through a very sandy road through Center City, Lindstrom, Chisago City, Forest lake, Wyoming, Hugo, W. Bear, arrived at W. Bear at 6PM. To not make the Crosby’s late for their dinner, I insisted on their going on, and leave me to meet the Konantz, as was planned – Miss Luis, Mrs Florence Akely Smith? + Mrs _____ came through and wanted me to go home with them. They finally ate their dinner at a restaurant and still the K’s did not come. – but as there was no place to leave word, I let them come on home and I waited until 8PM – when I was so hungry, tired and dizzy, I got on a St car and came to Plaza (at 10:30PM) and found the K’s had not waited for us at W Bear. I was peeved. Stayed with Anne over night.

Sept 28th Sun, Came home about 9AM found Chester (Her son, Chester Dudley Lyford) in bed – home all day – Crosbys and Minnie called up.

Sept 29th Mon. Did some washing and went over to Kappa House meeting.

Sept 30th Tue. Went to Dart + Betty (Her son Dartt Hendrickson Lyford and his wife, Elizabeth Lyford, nee Gallagher) about this time.

Oct 1st Wed. Went to Kappa House. Stayed over night to see girls settled. Went home in AM Though 1st Rushing Lunch on.

Oct 2nd Thurs So busy I could not get to Kappa House again.



Oct 3rd Fri Beautiful Day. Minnie came to lunch and took a rest. Though I had to go to learning ___ at 1PM as it was first meeting of Colonial Chap. + a reception to State Officers + Regents of Minneapolis Chapters + _____ A Me____. Minnie came down Later. Anne did not come. Mrs. Van Sant, Fremain, Watson, Mo, Wadsworth, White, Dodge and myself, hostesses. About 80 present and all went well. Tired.

Oct 4th Sat Charles (Her husband, Charles Chamberlain Lyford) came home this AM. Had conferences with Hutchins about Geo. Christian Co. Hope to close up sale of 817 3rd Ave by 1st of next week. Chas. Foot recovering, but slowly. (Chas. is short for Charles.)

Emma's Journal Part 2


Pokegama Hotel

Sept 22 continued.
Then went though a wonderful zigzag road through the Minn National Forest. (I Should Guess about 5 miles) and about 6 o’clock struck Bena, far south – of Deer River. Then went to the Federal Dam and about 50 miles to Grand Rapids arriving about 9:40PM – Tired out – went to 4th Vali Eating House for lunch – Stopped at Pokejama Hotel – Had a nice room to myself and a fair night rest

Sept 23rd Tues Left Hotel at 9:10AM Anne and I bought pork chops (16). Went east through Coleraine, Bovey – (Then had blow out and changed tires) Holman, Marble Calumet? Then tire sizzled – Sat by roadside while Edw. + Crosbys went to Buhl to get the vulcanized – At Calumet are the big Mines, Draper + Majorca. Pengilly, Nashwauk, Keewatin, Kelly Lake, Stutz?. Kerr? + Hibbing – Road around the biggest in Minn in world. Took him here about tires. Then first outside of Chisholm had to have tire fixed. Mountain Iron then Virginia – Here Edw. Bought another tire, getting one out of the Explore Office. Ate supper then. Though Stella was waiting dinner for us in Duluth. (Stella Elizabeth Randall, nee Lyford, is Emma's daughter.) Left about 6:10 and reached Duluth at 9:30, 72 miles. Florence and I went to Stella’s dead tired.


Spaulding Hotel

Sept 24th Wed At Stella’s all day – Minnie Edw., Anne came up to lunch, then we all (children too) drove out too Street Plant- Sunny but windy. Then Stella, Frank, Flo and I went down to the Spaulding for dinner with Minnie Edw. + Anne. (Frank Eugene Randall is Stella's husband. The "children" Emma refers to are her grandchildren by Stella.)

Sept 25th Thur. Left Duluth at 10:30AM. Lunch at _____ _____ On ____ ____ – Mr. Walter Kelly of St. Anthony Park had joined the Crosbys, - Through Two Harbors – over many ____ streams, and along the North Shore then of Superior, Arriving at Grand Marais about 6:PM. Foliage was wonderful. Stopped at (she left a blank spot here) hotel on lake ____ ____. Went out to fishing Dock. Then to movie. Evelyn Nesbit in “I wish to Forget”.

I'm posting My great great grandmother's journal as I transcribe it for those who are interested. The Journal spans from September 18th 1919 to September 1st 1921. Handwriting has changed since then and I can't always figure out the words. Notes in italics are by me.

Edward Albert Konantz 1857 - 1944

Sept 18th Thurs. Edward + Minnie (Edward Albert and Minnie May Konantz. Minnie is Emma’s Sister.) came up from St. Paul – called for me – we then went to Plaza for Anne + Florence. (Anne Lucretia Hendrickson, nee Ward, and her daughter, Florence Melvine Hendrickson. Anne is Emma’s brother, Eugene’s Wife.) Left the Plaza about 9:20AM for Park Rapids Minn. Went out Lyndale Av. – 6th Av N. – 20th Av. Crystal Lake Av to Robbinsdale – Osseo – Dayton – St Cloud – Little Falls - Staples – Wadena- Sebeka – Menahga – to Park Rapids – Arrived at 8 P.M. 200 miles – Stopped for picnic dinner and supper. A glorious day – roads + drive. Stopped at Great Northern Hotel.


Great Northern Hotel

Sept 19th Fri. Sunny + Cooler – Minnie brought leather coat – Florence leather coat – khaki breeches + hat. Mr. Freitag, (or Froeitag) of Bank invite us in his Ford out to (Grawdbold’s?) log camp on Bottle Lake, from which it is ¼ mile walk to Mantrap Lake. Mr. and Mrs. Oliver (and Elizabeth) Crosby overtook us here this P.M.

Sept 20th Sat. Stayed in camp all day excepting walking _?_ to Mantrap Lake – M. + Edw. Went fishing – no luck. I did not go out in _?_ - _?_ - as my knees aching.

Douglas Lodge

Sept 21st Sunday Beautiful cool day frost – last night – foliage turning rapidly. Skunk under house! At 9 o’clock we left for Lake Itasca. I rode with the Crosbys. Went to Douglas Lodge at one end of Itasca Lake - there about 3 miles at it’s outlet – about 10 ft wide, which is the source of the Mississippi River – flows north at first- Had our lunch here near the Totem Pole – on which is much data – as 2000 acres in Itasca Park. First white man here _ After lunch we drove to Bemidji. Had fine dinner at the Hotel Mark have went to the movies (one too many) Best was Madje Kennedy in “Strictly Confidential

Sept 22 Mon. Left Bemidji at 9 AM – drove past Birchmount Hotel + Golf Grounds. Next through several hours and finally put on chains to go to through Rosy – Heavy going. After leaving there nearly turned over into ditch while passing a car – Had to get _?_?_ to pull out the car – lost _?_ hours. After lunch (fine steaks) at Summit in a cemetery - After lunch started for deer river – After Mr. Crosby changed Direction of sign and

Followed the wrong road, passing through or over, Winnibigoshish Dam - struck a very bad swamp road and lost one spare tire.
